Capturing the glow of imaginary gems
Opals may be iconically Australian - but they never really crossed my mind as I strongly associate them with overpriced and unattractive tourist stores by the harbour. That is until recently, when I discovered their immense diversity. From bright royal blues to spacey blacks, my eyes and imagination have been opened to the wide variety of shades and colourways nature can create in these gems. Which naturally meant I then became fascinated with how they can be replicated in a lab with resins and pigments.
This collection is the result of my resultant experiments with watercolours, multimedia and digital painting to try and capture their colour diversity and prismatic fire, extending into the mother of pearl sheen of oyster shells.
